Knee & Leg

There are a range of injuries or problems that can cause pain in and around the joint. At Vigeo, my expertise is assessing and treating acute and persistent knee pain.

Some knee injuries or causes of pain recover within a short time. Others need a longer period of rehabilitation or even surgery. Once we assess your knee, we act immediately, so you can become pain free and reach the end of your recovery faster.

Knee pain can come from many causes - a twist, sports injury, gym injury, gardening, a fall, kneeling, or gradual wear and tear such as arthritis. We help identify what is contributing to your pain and guide you through the right recovery plan.

Acute knee pain

It could be an issue with the ligament(s), muscle(s), tendon(s), fat pad, bones, meniscus or cartilage, bursa or nerves. After a comprehensive structural assessment, we can take the next step with a customised knee treatment plan with your lifestyle and goals in mind.

Tips when caring for your knee injury:

• R.I.C.E: Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation. Don’t forget, it can make a huge difference.

• Swelling inhibition. Studies show that even 50ml of extra fluid on the knee inhibit normal muscle function. Affecting both your knee stability and making everything painful and limited.

o Correct, early swelling management reduces pain and improves knee mobility and ensures your knee doesn't worsen over time. Specific swelling activities and exercises encourage normal knee function again.

• Taping, bracing and support can make a huge difference to your knee recovery. During acute injury, bleeding can be part of the inflammation process. Support of the joint/injury can reduce the bleeding and inflammation so, the things you do day to day don't make it worse or cause you to compensate or recruit extra muscles/tissues.

• With a knee injury or problem, tension and spasm can occur in some of your knee/thigh/calf or hip muscles/tissues. We identify the cause of this for you, then help you release the tension and rebalance your muscles.

• We teach you to move your knee (legs and core) to reduce knee pain aggravation and worsening, so you can keep doing what you need to do (at home or work).

Persistent Knee Pain

Too many people live with knee pain that can recover. Without surgery, injections or aggressive joint replacement.

Some causes of persistent knee pain:

• Joint problems don’t cause all persistent knee pain

• Nerves are a missed, common source of knee pain

• Joint or arthritis issue. A joint replacement isn’t inevitable with the right rehab.

• Normal scans don’t lie; they show that your knee pain must be coming from something else.

The interconnected knee.

Your knee works as part of an integrated body system. When another part isn’t working right, it can lead to knee pain and altered loading. Dealing with the problematic part(s) is essential to avoid this and to get your knee working well again.
