Pain is real, even when it is complex. Modern pain science has shown that pain is not simply a direct measure of tissue damage. Pain is a protective response produced by the nervous system to get your attention and encourage you to protect yourself. This is why pain can sometimes continue after an injury has healed or feel worse than expected when the body’s pain system has become more sensitive.
Persistent pain often involves more than muscles, joints, discs or tendons. It can be influenced by many biological, psychological and social factors, including stress, poor sleep, fear of movement, previous experiences, beliefs about pain, work pressure and general health. These factors do not mean the pain is “in your head”. They mean the pain system is doing its job too well and has become overprotective.
The good news is that the pain system can change. Just as the body learns to become more protective, it can also be retrained. Understanding pain is often the first step. When you understand why pain persists, it becomes easier to move with confidence, become active again, reduce fear, and gradually teach the nervous system that movement is safe again. There can be many ups and downs along the way. The important thing is to get back on track again quickly so you can keep moving forward to becoming pain free again.

At Vigeo Physio, pain management is not about dismissing your symptoms or telling you to “just live with it”. It is about helping you make sense of your pain, identifying what may be keeping your system sensitive, and creating a practical pain approach specific to you.
When you understand your pain and work with it, your treatment becomes much more effective. This may include education, hands-on treatment, movement retraining, pacing strategies, strengthening, breathing work, and re-balancing your body to improve normal activities. The aim is to help you feel safer, move better, and regain confidence in your body.
