Plantar fasciitis is irritation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue along the bottom of the foot. It commonly causes pain around the heel or arch, especially when putting weight through the foot after rest, such as getting out of bed in the morning or standing up after sitting. Often, the pain eases as you move around, then returns later after activity or once you cool down again.
Plantar fasciitis is commonly related to repeated strain and overload through the plantar fascia. This can be influenced by changes in activity, prolonged standing, calf tightness, ankle stiffness, foot shape, and footwear. Risk factors may include:
Physiotherapy for plantar fasciitis starts with a comprehensive assessment to identify the tissues involved and any movement, strength, or mobility factors that may be contributing. Taping or other support strategies may help reduce stress on the area. Exercise-based treatment may include stretches and strengthening work, alongside advice on managing load and returning to activity. If the problem has been ongoing, we can also look at other factors that may be contributing.

For persistent or recurring problems, a broader approach may help.
